Diane and I recently returned from a celebration of our friends’ 25th wedding anniversary. It was an extravagant event held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island. I had the privilege of leading a vow renewal ceremony on the front porch of the hotel, overlooking the straits of Mackinaw. Following the ceremony, 50 family members and friends met in a private room for a luncheon catered by the staff at the hotel. It was an extravagant expression of celebration and love.
The apostle John records for us an expression of extravagant love in John 12. Jesus is in Bethany at the home of His good friends Martha, Mary and Lazarus. It is just a few days before Jesus goes to the cross in the greatest expression of love in human history. John writes … “Then Mary took a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.”
Have we ever considered an expression of extravagant love to our Savior? Maybe this Christmas rather than making a list of what we want, we could make a list of what we can give to our Savior and to others as an expression of extravagant love!
